TiVo's Series2 DVRs deliver more recording capacity at a lower cost than original TiVo models. The cornerstone of my home theater : TiVo R24004A 40-Hour Digital Video Recorder

We bought our TiVo last year and we love it!! We are no longer slaves to TV programming, we never miss a show and it's really easy to use. You can't imagine how often I rewind a segment and watch it over again in case I miss a word or caption. You will never hassle with taping via a VCR again, no more hunting for a blank tape. I can't praise this product enough!! We're buying a TiVo for my husband's parents who can't handle a VCR, so that should tell you the skill level - it's easy. TiVo really comes in handy when there's nothing on to watch - you just check your list of shows saved and go from there. We like the "season pass" option to tape our regular shows we never want to miss. This is one electronic item you will never have buyer's remorse about. Go ahead, buy the unlimited service contract. It's worth it. And 60 hours is plenty - we're good about cleaning out the space once we've watched something. If you get a Sony machine, you can ONLY download to a Sony VCR if you want to save something on tape. That was an unpleasant surprise for us.

Per TiVo customer service in an email sent to us today, "As stated, the $99 Premiere (and the $299 Premiere XL, also mentioned) are eligible for $19.99 monthly service only. Unfortunately, our Multi-Service Discount pricing cannot be applied to these boxes." We own a TiVo box with a LifeTime Service Agreement which qualifies us for the Multi-Service Discount per TiVo's published Agreement online. We bought a Premiere and an XL for use with Verizon FIOS based on that Agreement as published on the TiVo website. We would not have bought them if we had not expected to get the MSD pricing. When we requested this pricing, TiVo informed us that our purchases from Amazon were a promotional bundle and not eligible for anything other than the $19.95 monthly service fee each. This is not mentioned (a) in the Amazon presentation of these items or (b) in the Multi-Service Discount Agreement. TiVo quoted us a payment plan document and apparently their feeling is that this document is more important than the published MSD Agreement and overrides it.

So be very careful - if you don't buy the box from TiVo, you're going to be paying the $19.95 monthly fee per box whether you have existing MSDs in place or not. In our case, that's an additional service fee of $120 per year per box which we think wasn't advertised adequately and is not stated in the MSD Agreement. We will ask Amazon to update their webpage and TiVo to update their agreement to make this fixed price agreement clear to purchasers. But if you read this before the companies take any corrective actions, at least you'll know that the current pricing is a promotional bundle and it effectively keeps you from getting any kind of other monthly rate except for $19.95.

I have rated this purchase a 1 because of the misleading and expensive situation. We have been TiVo customers since 2001 and like the service. But we are very disappointed in TiVo's actions here. They reflect on the business side of the company very badly, in our opinion. Someone used the words "bait and switch" in another posting. Whether it meets the technical definition is hard for us to know, but it certainly feels like that is what happened here to us.

Wife Acceptance Factor - 100% : Universal Remote Control MX-500 10-Device LCD Viewscreen Remote Control with Joystick Operation

Before buying the MX-500 I tried many remotes. I bought and returned the 1 for all Kameleon.(Far too confusing and not enough buttons.) I then bought and returned the Sony AV 3000. (Again, not enough buttons, no way to label those that are there properly and a touchy touch screen.) I then tried the Phillips Pronto at a dealer. My God - how many screens do you have to go through to find the one you need?

I finally started doing some research on the Internet and decided to try the MX-500. Every once in a great while someone hits upon a design that is so simple and elegant that you wonder why nobody ever thought of it before. The MX-500 is one of these classics. I won't go through all of the things it does so well which other reviewers have eloquently described except to say that I have been able to program every command from every remote I have in such a way that I am able to know which button does what and to access them all quickly. I can also, for example, go to the VCR device and control some necessary TV functions (such as changing the TV input) from the VCR device. And I don't have to guess which button to press because it's clearly labeled. In fact, the MX-500 is easier to use than some of the original remotes which it replaces since some of them had tiny or confusingly placed buttons.

The MX-500's display is crisp with excellent contrast even in dim room lighting. If you have even a dim lamp on anywhere in the room you will be able to read the display. I never use the backlight. In fact,if there's anything bad to say about the MX-500 it's that the backlight is useless except in very dark surroundings.

In short, I think this is the best universal remote AT ANY PRICE.

Verizon FIOS & the right cable box : Infrared Receiver Extender Cable for HD DVR STB's

I have only had this item a short time and so I have not permanently mounted it nor have I extensively tested it. However, from initial testing, it appears to work as advertised with my Comcast HD STB (RNG 110 (Pace) with an "IR Receive" port). Price of the item is very reasonable and shipping was quick. The device also looks well-made. I would not have trouble recommending this item to anyone having compatible equipment.

Unlike analog VCRs, Philips's HDR312 personal TV receiver uses TiVo technology to store compressed audio-video data to a computer hard disk. When you're ready to watch a preselected program, the HDR312 retrieves it upon command from a list of shows you've recorded.

Among the most revolutionary aspects of the Philips/TiVo server is the ability to pause live broadcasts and either resume a program where you left off or return to the program in real time. For example, while watching live sporting events, you can replay the last eight seconds of the action. You can then return to the live broadcast at any time. Using the palm-size remote, you can rewind and fast-forward pretaped programs, skipping through recorded commercials if you choose.

Philips supplies all the necessary cables for setting up the HDR312, including a 50-foot phone line and splitter. You don't need a separate phone line; simply connect the splitter to the wall, connect your phone and receiver cable to the splitter, and you're in business. The phone line is vital, however, for downloading TV listings; recording shows; and receiving TiVo's Suggestions feature, which suggests programs you might enjoy based on your previous selections, and TiVolution Magazine, which offers recommendations on the best programs to watch. For once, a product that lives up to its ad slogans : Philips HDR312 TiVo 30-Hour Digital Video Recorder

Both are light years ahead of VCRs, both have ups and downs, either will change your idea of how television is watched. They both pause live TV, find and record your favorite shows without the hassles that tapes create. They both allow you to pay service costs up front (actually Replay _requires_ it), and if you do they both cost the same.

Tivo advantages: Suggestions. You give shows you like or don't like up to three thumbs up or thumbs down, and Tivo will look for things that match those preferences. Note that your preference information is never shared with Tivo Inc. It never leaves your house, the box makes the suggestions itself.

Recording by date, time, and channel. Useful for lengthy shows you only want a part of, events that may run past the scheduled end time.

Replay advantage: Theme areas which will record things based on keywords or actors. Tivo doesn't yet have this, but will by at least Halloween, probably sooner. As with Replay, software upgrades for Tivo are done automatically during the nightly call so existing Tivo owners will get it free.

Where Replay scared me off was it's labyrinth of complex scheduling and show retention rules and it's disk management, which essentially chops up the disk into separate areas for each show. If you make the shows "guaranteed" (which does not actually guarantee the show will record), those areas won't share space with each other, even if they aren't using it. For "non-guaranteed" shows space is shared, but no warning about schedule conflicts is given so you never really know what's going to be recorded. Even Replay doesn't know if a show will pass all the tests until moments before it's on, so it can't tell you in advance. Think that Frasier "show" area will catch double episodes? Nope, show areas only catch one showing per day. NBC shows Frasier at 8:00 one night instead of 9, but you're covered, right? Nope, show areas won't find a show if it moves more than one slot away from it's normal time. So you use a "Theme" area for Frasier instead of a "Show" area, another way to do automatic recordings. Set it for an hours worth of programming and you're set! Double episodes, hour long episodes, no problem, right? Except that theme areas grab shows from every channel on the dial, and your UPN affiliate shows two syndicated episodes of Frasier every night (this isn't hypothetical, mine does), so your Frasier theme area gets those too. So what, you say, they'll just get overwritten when the prime-time episodes run? Nope. Replay theme areas won't throw away a show until it's a day old, so when Frasier comes on NBC at 9:00, Replay finds the hour-long Frasier area already full of shows it can't delete yet so it doesn't record _any_ prime time episodes, even if there is space somewhere on the disk. The solution is to up the Frasier area to two hours so it can hold both the syndicated episodes you don't want and any hour long or double episodes you do. You actually have to manage and allocate space yourself, and to do it effectively you have to be aware of when channels you don't care about show episodes you don't want since they can prevent Replay from recording or keeping what you _do_ want. Even VCRs don't demand that much care and feeding.

A Tivo "season pass" handles this neatly and simply. It only records from the specific channel you set it to, but it doesn't restrict the times or number of episodes that will be recorded and it doesn't restrict shows to sharing a tiny portion the disk, so you'll get long, double, or moved episodes (unless a moved or extra episode conflicts with something else - neither Tivo or Replay can record two things at once, so something won't get recorded if that happens). Tivos to-do list shows you everything it will record through it's 10 days of programming data, and because Tivo projects it's space requirements throughout those 10 days, it knows it advance when a new recording would exceed it's capacity, and offers to delete some shows earlier than planned or cancel the recording.
